Johnny Cash's customized Martin D-35S
Johnny Cash was at the height of his career when he brought his 1968 D-35S to the newly formed GTR store in 1970 for a custom inlay job. GTR stood for George Gruhn, Tut Taylor and Randy Wood, and it was soon to become Gruhn Guitars. Randy Wood (now a respected instrument builder based in Savannah, GA) did the work, adding a Style 45 torch inlay on the headstock, engraved acorn and oak leaf abalone on the fingerboard, and Style 45 abalone top trim.
This guitar (inv. #AA6768) was one of the most important instruments in Cash's career from 1970 onward. He used it on his TV show and on numerous stage performances, and the top shows playing wear from his extensive use. With hard case, it is offered at $150,000
