Hailing from Richland, Washington, Joel built his first instrument – a six-string fretless bass - in junior high woodshop. He attended University of Washington in Seattle and earned a BS in physical sciences from Washington State University in 2008. Joel’s interest in building and repairing instruments led him to Ted Brown Music Co. as a stringed instrument and electronics tech in 2006 and then to Nashville to join the Gruhn repair shop in 2013. He is well-versed in many aspects of instrument repair and is one of the very few repairmen in Gruhn's history to specialize in amp repair.
Though his musical background is on piano, he plays bass in Earl Burrows and enjoys building guitar effects pedals in his spare time. His activities aren’t limited to those on land, though - Joel is also scuba certified and a licensed pilot.
