John Hartford (1937-2001) first gained recognition in the late 1960s as the writer of "Gentle on My Mind." His individualistic songwriting and banjo style landed him a regular guest spot on The Smothers Brothers Show and The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour. His 1971 Aereo-plain album was a major influence on the "progressive bluegrass" movement. Later in his career he turned his attention to old-time fiddling, and he became one of the key artists in the O Brother phenomenon.
