1971 D'Aquisto Excel
This 1971 Excel model showcases James D'Aquisto's development of his own style in the years immediately following the death of his mentor, John D'Angelico, in 1964. The circular peghead cutout, the scroll peghead inlay and the S-shaped soundholes easily distinguish this D'Aquisto from the guitars of D'Angelico and the earliest D'Aquistos.The finish color is a particularly appealing feature of D'Aquisto's work. The top finish of this instrument was damaged beyond repair, and the top has been refinished, with painstaking color matching, by the Gruhn Guitars repair staff.
This guitar (AR3820) is in excellent condition and has been fitted with a Gibson Johnny Smith floating pickup. The nut width is 1 11/16" nut width, and the guitar has a superb sound. With hard case it is offered at $27,500
