New Instruments from Davis Luthiers
Mervyn Davis of Johannesburg, South Africa, designs and builds truly unique instruments. Up until now virtually all acoustic guitars could be placed in one of four categories; classical/flamenco, flat top steel-string, archtop acoustic, and resonator guitars. However, the SmoothTalker is a totally new concept with modular construction, bolt together design, soundboard with the grain running perpendicular to the strings rather than parallel, and with virtually no downward pressure or upward torque on the soundboard with the tension downward on the bridge saddle exerted entirely within the bridge and not transferred to the top permitting very light bracing. These guitars have a unique sound of their own and are exceptionally well suited to blues, jazz, and Gypsy jazz such as was played by Django Reinhardt. The design permits full access to all frets and the notes in the upper register sing in a manner unique to this design such that all notes on the entire length of the fingerboard are not only are accessible, but have great tone, volume, and sustain. The instrument features built-in electronics and performs remarkably well with very little feedback even at high volume. This is one of the most innovative new guitar designs we have ever encountered.
