Martin 2-42

c1870 Martin 2-42

From 1858 through the end of the end of the century, Style 42 was Martin's fanciest model. Size 2, small by today's standards, was the third largest in Martin's line when this guitar was made, circa 1870, surpassed only by sizes 1 and 0.

This 2-42 exemplifies the elegance of a pearly Martin, with abalone top trim, an ivory bridge and pearl tuner buttons. Its most noteworthy characteristic is the clock-key neckset mechanism, which was common on early Martins but rare by 1870.

This guitar (inv. #AB6896) is in excellent condition. With a hard case, it is offered at $15,000.
